Industry plays a vital role in the economy of the
State. Sikkim has seen a great boom in industries in the recent years and
emerged as an industrial hub.Sikkim has long been
agro-based society but situations changed thoroughly in the recent years. With
the acceleration in the socio-political aspect of the society of Sikkim the
growth of industry in Sikkim has been tremendous.The
department of Industries in Sikkim is instrumental in bringing about a rapid
growth in the industries of Sikkim.The government has
formulated certain policies such as Sikkim Industrial promotion and Incentive
(SIPI) Act 2000 and its subsequent amendments in 2003 and 2007. Some of the
industries of Sikkim that desrrves a special mention
in this context are:

The State Government has identified the Ranipool-Rangpo, Ranipool-Saramsa, Melli-Legship including Jorethang and Naya Bazar areas as industrial belts. Industries Department is trying to acquire land for the purpose. The State Govt. has proposal to expedite the investment proposals through the Single Window System.
The Sikkim Industrial Policy and Incentive (Amendment) Act, 2003 has been published by the Government of Sikkim vide Gazette No.264 dated 13th August, 2003. The salient features of the above act are:

District Industries Centre, Sikkim Khadi & Village Industries Board (SKVIB) and Khadi & Village Industries Commission are implementing the PMEGP (Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme).
District Industries Centre (DIC), established at Jorethang and Gangtok are providing technical support, training and entrepreneur development programmes and marketing support to the artisans and tiny industries. Cottage and agro-based industries are also being assisted by the Government. Schemes for industrial incentives have been provided to SSI units by the Government.
North East Industrial & Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), 2007
The Govt. of India has approved a package of fiscal incentives and other concessions for the North East region “The North East Industrial & Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), 2007” effective from 01.04.2007. Under the new scheme all the new units as well as existing units which go in for substantial extension, unless otherwise specified and which commence commercial products within the 10 years period from the date of notification will be eligible for incentives. Sikkim has also been included under the scheme.
