Infrastructure

Roads, Communication and Transport

Sikkim is a landlocked mountainous State with un-navigable rivers and streams and is entirely dependent upon road transport. To consolidate the existing roads, transport sector and to develop the communication network the State Government has been constructing new roads and bridges besides maintaining and improving existing road network of the State.

Public Health

At present, a health facility comprises of 1 State Referal Hospital/STNM Hospital, 1 Central Referral Hospital at Gangtok, 4 District Hospitals with 50 bedded accommodations, 24 Primary Health Centres and 146 Primary Sub-Health Centres. Apart from improvement of infrastructure facilities a Central Referral Hospital for the State with all modern facilities has since been opened at Tadong. One institute of engineering has also been established at Majhitar while a medical college has commenced has been in operation at Tadong.

Power

The State Government has been attempting to improve the power situation by harnessing of the hydro-electric potentialities of the major rivers and streams in the State. Total power generation (in million units) has increased from 65.81 in 1993-94 to 303 in 2012-13 and 410.72 in 2014-15. 60 MW Rangit HEP, 510 MW Teesta Stage V both executed by NHPC is operational and the state is getting 12% free power. 99 MW Chuchachen HEP and 96 MW Jorethang loop HEP are operational and some of the IPP hydro projects are in advanced stage of commissioning.

Marketing

There is a need for improvement of the marketing facilities by gearing up the activities of Co-operative Sector in the State. Setting up marketing agencies for the agricultural products like ginger, cardamom, orange etc. and for the products from the SSI and Rural Artisans is essential for the survival of the industries and for ensuring remunerative returns to the farmers in the State.
